At its introduction in 2014 the BMW i8 was a future-oriented design that served as a benchmark in the hybrid automotive market. Even now in 2023 its aggressive yet aerodynamically sound architecture has the presence of a vehicle from the future.
From a performance standpoint the i8 has a unique distribution of power as the combustion engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology powers the rear wheels, while an electric motor drives the front. The combination results in all-wheel drive delivering quick and responsive acceleration at a moment’s notice.
Being a pioneer of sustainability, the construction of the vehicle was every bit as eco-friendly. The materials used included leather tanned with an extract from olive tree leaves, innovative textiles containing polyester granulate partly derived from recycled PET, and aluminum that was mostly obtained through recycling. The i8 was also the world’s first production vehicle equipped with laser headlights, which greatly reduced the lighting system’s energy consumption.
Automotive specialist and sales representative Tiffany took the aerodynamic marvel for a spin around Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau airport.
Driving around this spaceship-like coupe for the afternoon turned several heads. Especially when we stopped and opened the butterfly doors. The i8’s jet like body camouflaged well on roads surrounding Montreal’s Trudeau airport. It almost looks like it could accelerate down the runway and takeoff.
The ride was incredibly smooth for a sports car. It felt solid and agile with a user-friendly interface keeping the driver always connected. This futuristic plug-in-hybrid is accompanied by an 11.6kWh battery and two electric motors. The battery produces up to 29 kilometers of electric range and will seamlessly switch to the turbocharged 1.5 litre three-cylinder gas engine when needed.
Bold, yet defined, the i8 was a dream to drive and is the perfect car for adventures.
